GeoJournal Week 3 - Volcanoes

Image
Hello everyone! I am very fascinated by volcanoes, so this week was a fun week for me! Our family has been to Yellowstone Park many times and we love to study the caldera, but more will be coming up with that later this semester. I decided this week to post a video I found about one of the most amazing areas you can visit in southeastern Idaho, Craters of the Moon. On the NPS.gov website, Crater's of the Moon is described as a "Vast ocean of lava flows with scattered islands of cinder cones and sagebrush." The lava flows there are spectacular to look at, and have even been used in the past to train NASA astronauts preparing for a trip to the moon. There are huge lava tube caves there that can be explored. It is an amazing place that is a short drive from where I live! I will let the video speak for itself. I hope you enjoy this brief introduction to one of the most fascinating places you can visit. https://youtu.be/Bv07oiiyDCw

I was not sure where to begin with this week's journal entry. I do not have a background in Geology at all and as an Applied Business Management major, numbers are kind of what I deal with daily. This chapter has thrown a lot of information at us in a hurry, and I hope I have gained a grasp on minerals and rocks and what the differences are. My Great Grandpa Merrill on my Mother's side used to take gems and rocks and make beautiful creations out of them. My parents were lucky enough to inherit one of those. This project was a table, and I decided to share this and try to identify what my Great Grandpa used for it.  As I observed what I was looking at with this creation. I can definitely see geode, which can be distinguished by the crystal formations that are found after it is broken open. As I was researching how a geode is formed, it was very inte

Heavenly Father has definitely had His hand in my life guiding me to this point. We make Burley, Idaho our home and both my wife and I grew up in this area.  I have been married to my wife Jessica for almost 21 years, and we have been blessed with 4 wonderful kids. Burke is 19 and is almost finished with his mission papers, Annie is 17 and a senior in high school and talented musician, and Alexis is 11 and in 6th grade and loves science and art. Our daughter Graycee was still born in 2008 and would have been 12 in June, and is our guardian angel. My main hobby is disc golf. I spend a lot of time trying to recruit new player
