Week 2 GeoJournal Post

I was not sure where to begin with this week's journal entry. I do not have a background in Geology at all and as an Applied Business Management major, numbers are kind of what I deal with daily. This chapter has thrown a lot of information at us in a hurry, and I hope I have gained a grasp on minerals and rocks and what the differences are. Idaho is known as the Gem state, and it has that name for a reason. Idaho is home to some of the most beautiful gems you can find. My Great Grandpa Merrill on my Mother's side used to take gems and rocks and make beautiful creations out of them. My parents were lucky enough to inherit one of those. This project was a table, and I decided to share this and try to identify what my Great Grandpa used for it.

As I observed what I was looking at with this creation. I can definitely see geode, which can be distinguished by the crystal formations that are found after it is broken open. As I was researching how a geode is formed, it was very interesting to learn that crystals are formed in the hollow inside of a rock by precipitating out of groundwater. The bottom picture looks like it is a form of sedimentary rocks from the layers that can be clearly seen. I honestly am not sure what minerals are there, and I was hoping that some of you could help me identify some of what else is there. I appreciate you taking the time to read my post and I would love some help identifying some of the other minerals that helped make these beautiful rocks!
